CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma Sri Lanka

Build Your Management Skills

After completing CIPS Level 4, the next step in your procurement and supply career is the CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma in Procurement and Supply. This qualification develops the management, risk, contract and financial expertise that senior procurement professionals need to lead teams, manage complex commercial relationships and drive organisational value.

If you’ve finished Level 4 or are planning your pathway towards MCIPS in Sri Lanka, Level 5 is where your career development accelerates. This article explains what Level 5 covers, who should study it, how the modules and electives work, and how you progress to Level 6 and beyond.

What Is CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma?

CIPS Level 5 is the second qualification level in the professional pathway towards MCIPS (Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply). It builds directly on the operational and tactical knowledge you gained at Level 4 and prepares you for the strategic focus of Level 6.

The CIPS Level 5 Advanced Diploma is designed for professionals moving into management and senior roles. The syllabus moves beyond day-to-day procurement operations to focus on people leadership, organisational risk, complex contract management, financial strategy and ethical decision-making at scale. You’ll develop the knowledge and confidence to influence business strategy, manage supplier risk and lead procurement teams.

Level 5 carries 60 credits and normally requires around 600 hours of total study time. Most candidates spend between 12 and 18 months on the qualification depending on their pace, prior experience and available study time.

Who Should Study CIPS Level 5?

CIPS Level 5 is ideal for:

  • Senior buyers and procurement managers moving into team leadership
  • Contract managers handling complex commercial relationships
  • Commercial managers responsible for strategic sourcing
  • Category managers developing supplier strategies
  • Supply-chain managers planning across multiple disciplines
  • Logistics managers transitioning to strategic roles
  • Professionals with Level 4 or equivalent who want to progress towards MCIPS

The qualification suits working professionals most of all. Many students combine study with full-time roles because the content directly applies to the challenges they face in their jobs. A contract dispute you’re managing at work becomes a case study in your exam revision. A supplier negotiation you’re leading informs your assignment submissions.

CIPS Level 5 Structure: Core Modules and Electives

Level 5 combines five core modules and three electives you choose from a wider list. The five core modules are compulsory and cover management, risk, contracts, finance and ethics.

Core Modules (Five Compulsory, 42 Credits)

Managing Teams and Individuals (12 credits) covers leadership, organisational behaviour, motivation, conflict resolution and building high-performing teams. You’ll explore how to lead procurement teams through change, manage performance and develop people.

Managing Supply Chain Risk (6 credits) teaches you to identify, assess and mitigate supply-chain disruption. You’ll study supplier financial health, geopolitical risk, regulatory compliance and continuity planning.

Managing Contractual Risk (6 credits) focuses on contract law, risk allocation, liability and dispute resolution. You’ll learn how to protect the organisation through clear contract language and ongoing performance management.

Advanced Contract and Financial Management (12 credits) integrates contract performance with financial outcomes. This is the module where procurement strategy meets business finance: capital budgeting, cost control, invoice processing and the impact of procurement decisions on profit and cash flow.

Managing Ethical Procurement and Supply (6 credits) addresses ethics, integrity, sustainability and responsible sourcing. You’ll explore conflicts of interest, anti-bribery rules, environmental and social responsibility, and how to embed ethical practices across your supply chain.

Together, these five core modules give you the management fundamentals every advanced procurement professional needs.

Elective Modules (Choose Three from Six, 18 Credits)

Level 5 offers six elective modules, each worth 6 credits. You choose three to specialise in areas most relevant to your role and career goals.

Category Management teaches you to segment suppliers strategically, develop sourcing strategies for each category and measure value beyond price. This module appeals to professionals managing broad areas of spend.

Achieving Competitive Advantage Through the Supply Chain focuses on how procurement and supply decisions support business competitiveness. You’ll study cost leadership, differentiation, innovation and customer value.

Project and Change Management is ideal if you’re leading procurement transformation, systems implementation or organisational restructuring. You’ll learn project governance, stakeholder management and change adoption.

Operations Management covers production efficiency, service delivery and process optimisation. It suits professionals in logistics, distribution or manufacturing-linked supply chains.

Logistics Management specialises in warehousing, transport, inventory optimisation and network design. Choose this if logistics or distribution is central to your role.

Advanced Negotiation deepens your commercial negotiation skills beyond the Level 4 introduction. You’ll study negotiation strategy, cultural awareness and complex multi-party deals.

Not every GCAS intake offers all six electives. Contact GCAS to confirm which electives are available in the cohort you’re considering joining.

Entry Requirements for CIPS Level 5

The primary requirement is clear: you must have successfully completed the CIPS Level 4 Diploma in Procurement and Supply before you can enrol on Level 5.

If you’ve completed Level 4 with another provider or through self-study, GCAS will guide you through the registration process with CIPS to confirm your eligibility. Bring your Level 4 qualification certificate or transcript when you make your enquiry.

There are no additional academic or professional experience requirements beyond Level 4 completion, although most Level 5 students have two to five years of procurement experience in their background.

Level 5 Progression: What Comes After?

When you finish Level 5, you progress naturally to CIPS Level 6 Professional Diploma, the final qualification stage in the study pathway towards MCIPS.

Level 6 takes your knowledge to strategic leadership level. Where Level 5 focuses on management capability, Level 6 addresses global strategy, future professional challenges, innovation and the highest-level decision-making in procurement and supply.

After you complete Level 6, you then formally apply to CIPS for membership upgrade to MCIPS. Completing Level 6 does not automatically award MCIPS: you must meet CIPS’s current membership requirements, which may include relevant professional experience, ethical declarations and continued professional development commitments.

Key Reasons to Study CIPS Level 5

Build leadership and team capability. The Level 5 core modules on managing teams, risk and contracts give you the professional knowledge and confidence to step into senior procurement roles and lead people effectively.

Deepen commercial and financial skills. Advanced contract and financial management module shows how procurement decisions influence business profit, cash flow and shareholder value. This knowledge helps you make strategic sourcing choices and justify investment in supplier relationships.

Specialise in your area. Choose three electives from category management, competitive advantage, change, operations or logistics. Tailor your qualification to strengthen the areas most relevant to your current job and future career path.

Progress towards MCIPS. Level 5 is a required stepping stone on the path to MCIPS membership. Completing Level 5 with strong grades also helps when you move to Level 6, which is the final qualification stage before MCIPS application.

Gain internationally recognised credentials. CIPS qualifications are respected by employers across procurement, supply, logistics and commercial roles worldwide, and particularly valued in the UK, Europe, Middle East and Asia. CIPS Level 5 signals that you’ve met rigorous international professional standards.

Study without leaving your job. Live online delivery means you can balance study with full-time work. Most students combine Level 5 study with their existing roles over 12 to 18 months.

How to Prepare for CIPS Level 5 Exams

CIPS Level 5 assessment consists of five three-hour written examinations (one for each core module) and three three-hour examinations for your chosen electives.

Start early. Begin exam preparation 8 to 12 weeks before your examination date. Review your lecture notes, work through past paper questions and create summary notes for each module theme.

Use past papers. CIPS releases past examination papers for candidates to practise. Working through actual exam questions under timed conditions shows you what the examiners expect and builds your exam technique.

Form a study group. If possible, find other Level 5 candidates and meet regularly to discuss case studies and complex topics. Teaching a concept to someone else cements your own understanding.

Ask for support. GCAS provides examination guidance sessions and assignment feedback to help you prepare. Use these resources: they’re included in your course fees and designed specifically to support your success.

Balance breadth and depth. Don’t memorise definitions. The examiners want to see that you understand how risk, contracts, finance and ethics interconnect in real procurement decisions. Study examples and think about how core modules relate to your own workplace challenges.
