Entry Route Three: Two Years of Relevant Business Experience
If you have at least two years of work experience in a business environment—even if you do not have formal A Levels—you may be eligible for Level 4.
“Relevant business experience” includes roles in procurement, purchasing, supply chain, logistics, warehouse management, contracts, commercial work, finance, operations, business administration or other roles involving business decisions, supplier management or purchasing responsibility.
Two years of part-time work, freelance work or self-employment in a business context can also count. The key is demonstrating that you have worked in a professional setting and understand basic business concepts. You do not need to have worked specifically in procurement to use this route.
Direct Entry vs. Exemption: Clarifying the Difference
A common question is whether direct entry to Level 4 means you have an “exemption” from Levels 2 and 3.
The answer is no. Direct entry means you meet the eligibility criteria to start at Level 4. There is no exemption involved because Levels 2 and 3 are separate qualifications, not prerequisites to Level 4.
If CIPS rules change in future, or if you hold a different qualification (such as a degree, professional qualification or overseas credential), CIPS may grant a formal exemption from specific modules within Level 4.
